Reverse College Day Keynote Speaker, Sydney Chaffee
Aria Mia Loberti recently graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Rhode Island, triple majoring in Philosophy, Communication Studies, and Political Science, with minors in Ancient Greek and Rhetoric. She is a 2020/2021 Fulbright Award recipient, through which she is pursuing an MRes in Rhetoric from Royal Holloway, University of London. Upon the completion of her Fulbright, she will pursue a MA/Ph.D. in Rhetoric at Penn State University. Loberti also has advocated for human rights at home and abroad, including at the United Nations, and has been featured in forums such as Huffington Post, Thomson Reuters Foundation, and TED.
Aria, born with a rare eye condition called Achromatopsia, is legally blind. As a result of her experiences fighting for her right to an education, she has been an advocate for as long as she can remember; her first experience with publicly speaking out for her rights came at just four years old to the RI House Finance Committee. She now has experience as a U.N. youth delegate, U.N. Women speaker, and U.N. Outstanding Youth Award recipient. Alongside her Guide Dog, Ingrid, Aria shares her story of resilience and optimism in the face of adversity - from her difficulties getting fair access to an education as a child, to her pursuit of her goals and dreams as a college student, grad student, and aspiring scholar. Her mission is to not only de-stigmatize vision loss and dismantle stereotypes surrounding disability, but to inspire others to embrace change, empathy, resilience, and hope in the face of any barrier.
